Travelogue number 1 from S/Y Omni

Los Cristianos, 29th october 1997

I have just arrived Los Cristianos, Tenerife hoping to find a place to haul out the boat. But everything is full. So unfortunately I probably have to sail back to Lanzarote. Its difficult to find a place to leave the boat and still more difficult to find a cheap place. Half of Europe must be down here waiting to cross the atlantic. My plan is to go back to Norway to work instead of staying here doing nothing and wait for the end of hurricaneseason.. The tradewind is also more stable in january than in december and I still have time to reach the carneval in Brasil.

There is not much to tell about here in Canaries. This is just like Florida or worse. Just old and fat touristpeople waiting to die.. There is mabye one nice island - Gomera. But I havent been there yet.

Omni is working ok. Something breaks down, but I have tried to make everything as simple as possible. My experience with bad weather is close to nil on Omni yet. I have had mabye on close to gale, but I dont complain. Before I left Norway I was a bit curious about bad weather after reading all kind of stories about storms, especially when my plan was sailing to Greenland.

The price here in Canaries is just like home. I have started to make my own tin food. It rather easy. You need some jars with rubberband and bayonetlocking. And then a pressurecooker. Then you need to make your own favourite food and cook it for one hour in the cooker. Chicken and Carry and Beef is my favorite. There is something called botulism so you should do it right but a lot of people have done this for hundreds of years so the method is probably ok. I think I have almost 100 jars of homemade food by now. And best of all. It taste much better than all the crap, like Campell etc.

My next project will be to dry fish and build a solar still for drying.
